You never know who you might meet when you are in another country. Last week at our Sunday meeting we met a nice family who are actually in the Spanish field in a neighboring town. They try to attend the English meetings periodically in order to support the congregation and practice their English. Well it turns out that the sister is from Los Angeles, California. When Kanicia first met the sister you would have thought that they were separated at birth! When one is so far from home the chance to meet someone from your country is a cause for a lot of excitement. This is especially so since there are so few Americans here. The sister, Veronica, has been living here for over ten years with her husband Manuel and daughter Alyssa. For Kanicia it was nice to meet someone who understands her culture and understands everything she says when she speaks.
We made plans to do some sight seeing since this is the holidays for many here. Over the weekend the family took us to San Juan Gaztelugatxe which is about 45 minutes from Bilbao. This is an island on the Basque coastline which is connected to the mainland by 231 man made steps. On top of the island sits a small church dating back to the 10th century and another covered area where you can have a picnic and enjoy the surrounding views of the ocean. This area is very popular with tourists and locals and for good reason! The views of the ocean are absolutely breath-taking! The weather when we visited was excellent and you could see off into the distance for miles. We enjoyed a meal on top of the island and then we walked back down to have a coffee in the restaurant on the mainland which has equally amazing views. We had a great time and it was nice to get out of the city for a little while. Being able to see the beauty of creation makes us reflect on Jehovah’s creative power as we are considering in our book study. What a loving and powerful God we serve who allows us to enjoy the many good things of creation! (Jer 10:12)
