Become a Proofreader

JOB

This job involves proofreading for court reporters in the United States. We stumbled across this opportunity a few weeks ago after hearing about some that had taken the course. The person had taken the course and within a short time was able to support themselves and live abroad in Thailand solely from their proofreading clients. After hearing about their success we started to research the course and we even took the free intro lessons that are provided. We could see how this could be ideal for someone who wants to have a flexible job and still be able to focus the majority of their time on pioneering or serving in another land. As you might have guessed proofreading involves finding errors in documents whether in punctuation, grammar or otherwise. If you have an eye for detail and are willing to learn specific techniques this could be something for you.

PROS

There are many advantages to this type of work. To begin with you can work anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access and a way to communicate with your clients. This could include such places as Ecuador, Thailand, Mexico, etc. Another benefit of this course is that you set your own hours. What is most important is that you complete the work assigned and not that you work specific hours such as 9h-5h. This would allow you to share in volunteer education work in the mornings and then work in the evenings for example.

Another great thing about this particular proofreading course is that you can try it out to see if it’s something that would be a good fit. The course creator Caitlin, offers a 7-day free intro course as well as a 30 day Jump Start pack. This will let you get your feet wet and you will be able to see if this could work for you. Another thing that is great about this course is that you can see the results of past students who have taken the course. Many have been able to support themselves and have left their previous full-time jobs.

CONS

If I have to mention any cons or negative points it could be that proofreading is not for everyone. Some people may not at all be interested in correcting pages and pages of documents even if they are being paid for it. Also the course is only looking for serious students which is why there are tests at certain points before you are able to move on. This actually ensures the level of quality of the students and guarantees that they know what they are doing.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall the entire course should take around two to four months to complete. The course is split up into different sections consisting of nine modules. One nice thing is that you don’t have to pay for the entire course at once but instead you purchase a group of modules and as you progress you get the rest. The instructor and the material seem really top-notch and they also seem to take pride in their students succeeding. We are currently not enrolled in the course mainly due to the fact that we have some other projects that we’re working on. But we are keeping it in mind if one day we want to change direction. As anything else, the course is an investment and you get what you put into it. But if in two to four months you can acquire a skill that will be able to support you anywhere in the world for a fraction of the cost of traditional schooling that could be something worth considering. 1. Great! I’m sure many people will be able to benefit.

  3. I’d like to hear from someone who has actually done the course and is now working as a proofreader. I mentioned it to a sister in UK and she told me there are loads of adverts for these courses, which makes it a bit suspect in my eyes.

    1. Hi Sallie, like anything else out there it pays to do your homework. We recommend the course because we believe that it works but we recommend that everyone do their own research since their are no guarantees out there and everyone is different with regards to putting in the work and getting results.

  4. thanks
