So many have asked us about what we’re eating here in Spain. Well Murcia is known as an agricultural region, in fact there are ‘heurtas’ or farms all around where we live. Therefore, there are a lot of fruits and vegetables available, which if you know us well you know we are happy about, since we are pretty healthy eaters. Although ham is king here in Spain, we have noticed that people in Murcia eat a lot more veggies than in Madrid. There are many ‘farmer’s markets’ here and the one for our neighborhood is just two blocks away on Tuesdays. We usually go and get our produce there around 7:30 or 8am before service on Tuesdays. These farmers’ markets are well stocked! There are full meat markets, fish markets, stalls with only olives, only nuts, clothing, shoes, and the traditional stalls of fruits and vegetables. This week we left with six or seven bags of fruits and veggies for about 9 euros: potatoes, onions, garlic, lettuce, tomatoes, bananas, grapes, green onions, pomegranates, cherimoya, herbs, Brussels sprouts, asparagus…I think that’s it 🙂 Food is very inexpensive here and of good quality. We usually go to the bakery and buy a baguette for the day, it’s about .40-.60 depending on which one we go to. We have fruit and a muffin for breakfast…the muffin is called a Madelina, it tastes like a Madeline cookie but as a muffin:) We walk basically out our door and around the corner and buy them every morning, for two it’s .90. A bottle of wine here is around 1,50 euro and you can have a beer for .40! Even going to eat at a restaurant is inexpensive here. There are many restaurants that have a menu of the day which ranges from 8-10 euros per person but includes three to four courses and drinks and dessert. There are many times we have had lunch for 5 or 6 euros for the both of us, including drinks!
