One thing that we noticed soon after arriving in Spain is that this is a culture that loves to get together. Whether its due to the different pace of life or the more family-oriented attitudes, Spain is full of people who like to be with people! This is no exception with the brothers and sisters. This weekend we shared a meal with the brothers every single day and sometimes twice in one day! One thing that makes this easier is that we all literally live around the corner from one another. It is not uncommon for us to be walking to a service meeting or to the grocery store and for us to have at least one or two witnesses honk at us as they pass by to say hello! It’s like we live in a little witness town! We really like that small town feel of having everyone really close. This is a big change for us from back home. Coming from a big city we didn’t run into the witnesses as much. Also we would meet for service far from our home doing a lot of driving so we would not have a chance to really “bump” into someone as often.
After the meeting on Saturday we were invited to have dinner with an elder and his wife along with a couple from our French group. We enjoyed a nice meal in their home and were able to learn more about the culture here in Spain as well as in Murica. We learned a lot about the attitudes that are found in the territory as well. It was really interesting to hear about how the elder that we had dinner with came into the truth. As he was telling the story he got up and got the Proclaimers book and turned to a page showing how the work in Spain began and he pointed to a brother who helped him to learn about Jehovah. The brother spoke with such feeling and love for this brother and what he had done for him that you could not help but be moved! Now we are coming to understand why the brothers in Murcia are know for their love!
On Sunday we were invited to have dinner with a pioneer couple from the Spanish congregation and another couple in our group. The pioneer couple had just returned from London last week and they shared with us how happy they were to have the new Bible from the branch there. They got to visit many different sites as well as practice their English! 🙂 Apparently, from what they tell us many people from Spain fly to London just to go shopping. It’s a 2 hour flight. I guess it could be compared to someone going to NY to shop. I hope Kanicia doesn’t get any ideas…
